Enhancing Manufacturing Resilience through Advanced Disruption Sensing
By Georgios Bardas, Netcompany-Intrasoft
As part of the M4ESTRO EU Project project, Netcompany-Intrasoft has developed a novel prototype for sensing and quantifying global disruptions with direct implications for resilient manufacturing.
The system is built on a modular, data-driven architecture capable of monitoring diverse sources of external risks, ranging from geopolitical instability and economic shocks to natural disasters. It fuses and processes multiple data streams, including financial indicators (via Yahoo Finance), global media content (e.g., GDELT, YouTube API), and structured third-party data sources.
Component Functionality
The prototype integrates multiple analytics services, each targeting a specific domain of disruption:
Financial Market Turbulence Analysis
Supplier Reliability Assessment
Natural Hazard Monitoring
Trade Route Disruption Detection
Geopolitical Event Monitoring
These services utilize shared statistical and machine learning modules, such as sentiment analysis, volatility clustering, and anomaly detection. All processed data is normalized, scored, and stored in a unified backend, ensuring compatibility with downstream decision-support tools in manufacturing environments.
Scenario-Based Demonstration
The solution was validated across a series of significant real-world scenarios, including:
The COVID-19 pandemic closures
The 2018 tsunami in Indonesia
The Ever Given incident in the Suez Canal
The 2023 earthquake in Turkey
The collapse of Lehman Brothers
Each scenario triggered context-specific analytics pipelines, allowing the system to generate risk indicators that closely mirrored the severity and real-time visibility of the actual events. The outputs demonstrated strong alignment with historical data and stakeholder expectations.
Impact and Outlook
This external risk sensing capability serves as a cornerstone for the reconfiguration models envisioned in M4ESTRO EU Project . It enables manufacturers to proactively assess and respond to emerging risks, supporting more agile and informed reconfiguration strategies. Through this work, Netcompany-Intrasoft contributes to building the foundation for resilient, intelligent, and adaptive manufacturing systems.
